HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – Over 300 Hope College students will participate in service projects throughout Holland on Saturday with the college’s “Time to Serve” program on Saturday, September 10.
The mass volunteer effort started in 2000 with 10 projects and has grown from there. Most of the students will be from the freshman class of 2020. Students work in groups of five to 12 at 30 different sites from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with projects in the Holland and Zeeland area.
Greg Olgers, Director of News Media for Hope College says the projects vary from sorting Bibles from Mexico, to farm work at the Critter Barn, to working at the Outdoor Discovery Center, to groundskeeping and cleaning at many organizations.
” The event serves two purposes. It’s meant to give some of our newer students a chance to get acquainted with eachother and the community. It’s also meant to make a difference in the community. Beyond the date to give them the opportunity to see the chances for service locally and hopefully to get involved well beyond the day itself.” Olgers said.
In October of 2001, “Time to Serve” 200 received a 2001 Distinguished Service Award from Keep Michigan Beautiful Inc. during the group’s annual conference.
