ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Feb. 23, 2022) – On the heels of the retirement of one long-time public servant in Zeeland earlier this month comes word of the passing of another titan in that city’s police department.
Larry Veldheer, who was the Chief of Police for that community for 32 years, died on Monday at the age of 94. He joined the force in 1952, working his way from being a patrolman to heading up the department seven years later. According to his obituary, Chief Veldheer earned many honors during his career before retiring in 1992.
Outside of his law enforcement work, he was active as an Elder at Zeeland’s Third Christian Reformed Church, and along with his wife, volunteered as Camp Hosts for nearly two decades at Silver Lake State Park. One of Chief Veldheer’s last public appearances was on February 11th, when he attended an open house for retiring Zeeland Police Lieutenant Tom Ball.
Two visitation sessions for Chief Veldheer are set for Friday before a Saturday afternoon funeral at Third Christian Reformed Church.
