ST. IGNACE, MI (WHTC) – Meet “Mighty Mac”, a bald eagle who got his name in honor of the location where he’ll be released back into the wild.
The Mackinac Bridge Authority (MBA) is assisting in the release of the bald eagle with Wings of Wonder (WOW), an Empire-based raptor sanctuary and rehabilitation center.
WOW founder and Director Rebecca Lessard first met “Mighty Mac” when she received a call from a concerned person In Manistee County who spotted the eagle sitting on a fence post at a horse ranch. Lessard says he was weakened and believes the eagle was suffering from West Nile Virus. Mighty Mac was in intensive care for 48 hours where he received fluids and medical attention.
Lessard says the eagle is between 7 and 10 years old, fully rehabilitated and strong. Might Mac will be released to the wild from either a bridge tower or from an anchor pier on the Mackinac Bridge on Tuesday, October 4. Lessard will give a brief introduction about the release in Bridge View Park around 12 p.m. prior to the release.
WOW is a 501c3 charity that rehabilitates and releases more than 120 raptors each year and also provides more than 100 educational programs annually.
