HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – Over 100 people participated in a a demonstration to promote love and unity Tuesday evening at Van Bragt Park alongside the Unity bridge in Holland.
The theme was “Love trumps hate,”and Holland Pride stood in support alongside area churches and organizations.
People carried signs and many brought their children with them in show of support. Michele Driesenga of Holland Pride helped organize the event and says it’s not political. “All the way around it just doesn’t feel like there is any positives happening. It’s by no means political. I don’t think what is happening right now is the result of the election, but it certainly brought it to light. We thought it was time to turn up the light on the positivity message,”
Pastor Bryan Berghoef of Holland United Church of Christ spoke to the crowd.
“We feel concerned for our nation, afraid for our children, anxious for our allies and worried for our world. We feel for our gay friends, our immigrant friends, our native american, african american friends and latino friends. Our friends who are Muslim or of other faith.”
Holland Pride is part of the organization Out on the Lakeshore. Together they hope to combine their resources to form a new resource center for Holland’s LGBTQ community.
