HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – Holland’s Human Relations commission invites local students to participate in the Martin Luther King, “I Have A Dream” essay competition.
The competition is part of the initiative to recognize that youth are essential in moving Martin Luther King’s dream forward. The submission should describe what their dream is for equal access and opportunity in their school or community. They must make a case for their recommendation and why this is important for our future. It must also state what they will do in their school to promote equality and access in the community.
Ester Fifelski from the City of Holland says the reason they are having the contest is to include the youth in our community in having conversations around social justice. ” Additionally, I strongly believe, that our children will inspire the adults in the community. They are the next generation.”
Each submission should include their name, name of school, grade, and a parent’s telephone number. There are three competitive categories: Category 1: 4th and 5th grades; Category 2: 6th, 7th and 8th grades; and, Category 3: 9th through 12th grades. Students are asked to write an essay no longer than 2 – 3 pages, double-spaced.
Submissions are due by midnight on Monday, December 12, 2016. All essays should be submitted online. Essays may also be mailed or delivered to City of Holland, Human Relations Department, 2nd Floor; 270 S. River Avenue, Holland, MI 49423. If you have any questions, please contact (616) 355-1322.
