POLKTON TWP, MI (WHTC) – A three-vehicle injury crash closed Eastbound I-96 at 12th Avenue in Nunica just before 1 p.m on Thursday, Nov. 17.
Sgt. Dennis Luce of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office says Craig Tober, 57, of Nunica was traveling EB on I-96 near the 14 mile marker at a high rate of speed in a 2008 Cadillac CTS. According to witnesses he attempted to pass a 1994 Ford van that was on the shoulder of the road before it could merge into the outside travel lane.
Tober’s Cadillac struck the rear-end of the van driven by Jose Espinoza, 31 of Coopersville and caused it to lose control striking a Ford Freestyle another vehicle driven by Sandra Enders, 67, of Norton Shores.
This action caused all vehicles to lose control and Espinoza’s and Ender’s vehicles to roll into the median. Tober suffered no injuries in the crash and two passengers in Espinoza’s vehicle were treated and released at the scene.
An additional passenger in Espinoza’s vehicle, David Vasquez of Grand Rapids, was transported to Spectrum Butterworth for neck and back injuries. Sandra Enders suffered neck and back injuries and was transported to Spectrum Butterworth.
I-96 Eastbound was close for over an hour during the crash investigation. Responding agencies were the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, Coopersville-Polkton Fire/Rescue and Life EMS.
