LANSING, MI (WHTC) – It’s time to get to work for some able-bodied adults in four Michigan counties.
The state Department of Health and Human Services is notifying a total of around 14 thousand people without dependents in Ottawa, Kent, Oakland and Washtenaw counties who are receiving food assistance benefits that they will be required by federal law to meet work requirements. Such guidelines had been waived for 14 years due to Michigan’s high unemployment at the time, but a significant reduction in the state’s jobless rate has caused Michigan to no longer qualify for such a waiver.
Those affected have three months to meet the federal requirements, and the entire state will be phased out of this waiver by October of 2018. More information is available here.
