WASHINGTON (WHTC) – One can’t blame Fred Upton for feelings akin to an expectant father these days.
The long-time Congressman could see one of his legacy bills take a big step towards becoming the law of the land by Wednesday as the US Senate is expected to approve his 21st Century Cures Act. It received a big boost from President Obama in his weekly media address this past Saturday, which surprised the St. Joseph Republican.
“It was all about Cures,” Upton admitted during his weekly appearance on “WHTC Morning News” in Holland, MI on Tuesday. “You never know what (the President) is going to say (beforehand), but it was all about our bill, and how he’s going to sign it as soon as it got down (to his desk). I thought it was going to get down there in a week or two, (so) I’ll have to come back from Michigan for the bill-signing ceremony, but I think that he may sign it on Thursday.”
Besides speeding up approval of new drugs and medical devices, the 6.3 billion-dollar measure will create a sweeping research framework for many diseases and conditions from cancer to Alzheimer’s disease to opioid addiction.
