JACKSON, MI (WHTC) – Winter is here to stay and for many facing hardship, keeping the heat on will require assistance.
Consumers Energy says more than 16,000 Michigan households will receive the assistance through it’s CARE program. The CARE program that is in it’s forth year is an affordable payment plan available to Consumers Energy customers based on their income. For qualified households with a past due balance, CARE can provide help for as long as 12 months. The program is funded by the Michigan Energy Assistance Program.
“Even if you were in the CARE program last year you still have to re-enroll. Our whole goal is to get people off this program and get them into self sufficiency.” says Con Ed’s Roger Morgenstern.
Among its benefits:
Participants receive a 50 percent credit on their monthly energy bill from November through March, and 30 percent in April through October.
A past due balance is frozen and will be paid down over the program year as long as participants make regular monthly payments.
Participants qualify to receive a free in-home energy efficiency visit and weatherization services through Consumers Energy’s Helping Neighbors program.
You can call Consumers Energy to enroll at 1-800-477-5050 and also sign up for the CARE program online.
