GRAND HAVEN, MI (WHTC) – Preliminary findings from Ottawa County Sheriff’s Detectives indicate that a 14-year-old Grand Haven Township boy apparently broke through the ice as he attempted to walk across Millhouse Bayou off of Mercury Drive late on Tuesday afternoon.
A deputy found the body of Carter Dyke underneath some ice, and efforts to revive him at North Ottawa Community Hospital were unsuccessful. The Grand Haven High freshman had been reported missing by his parents when he didn’t return home after walking to a nearby convenience store.
Captain Mark Bennett said that an autopsy was conducted at Holland Hospital on Wednesday. It showed that Dyke had drowned, and that no foul play was suspected. Investigators believe that he may not have been aware of exactly where he was when he fell through the ice.
Grand Haven High officials had crisis teams on hand for grieving classmates, teachers and staff, and had asked all Buccaneers before coming for classes on Wednesday to wear blue clothing in honor of Dyke.
Visitation for Carter Dyke is on Saturday from 2 to 6 PM at Hope Reformed Church in Grand Haven, where his funeral service is slated for Sunday at 4 PM.
