HOPKINS, MI (WHTC) – Gun Lake Band officials say that evidence of the Beech scale insect has been found on tribal land near Hopkins. They didn’t disclose a date of when the discovery was made, but say that this invasive species secretes a white wax substance that causes Beech trees to die, often times to snap at mid-trunk. It is believed that the discovery was made early enough to contain the spread of Beech Bark Disease, but officials say that public awareness and notification of further infestation is needed.
