ALLEGAN COUNTY, MI (WHTC) – A deadly tree disease that was first documented in Ottawa County has now spread south towards Allegan County. The infection, called beech bark disease, affects the bark on beech trees and is caused by an invasive scale insect that eats into the tree’s bark, allowing for an exotic fungus to permeate the tree and kill it from the inside out. Tribal environmental technicians first noticed the insect when treating trees infested with another type of invasive beetle, the emerald ash borer. Technicians have identified the insect causing the problems, but not the fungus. As they investigate further, they will begin treating affected trees.
