ALLENDALE, MI (WHTC) – Three members of the GVSU Cross Country team were stranded on an island along the Grand River. Yesterday just after 2 p.m., Ottawa County Sheriff;s Deputies along with fire rescue and EMS were dispatched along the Grand River Bridge in Allendale.
Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sgt. Bob Rusher said the trouble started on the way back as the river had risen stranding the runners on an island. One of the runners attempted to cross the ice onto dry land and fell thre the ice up to his neck but was able to free himself onto dry land.
The runners did have their cellphones with them and called 911 for help. Georgetown TWP fire rescue launched a rescue boat from Grand River Park and was able to transfer all three subject to dry land. On 19 year old was transported to Spectrum Butterworth hospiral for hypothemia. The other two runners were treated and released at the scene.
