SAUGATUCK, MI (WHTC) – Saugatuck Public Schools Superintendent Rolfe Timmerman admits his district is facing a unique problem in the state. Enrollment is down in the picturesque area because real estate in Saugatuck is too expensive for families.
Timmerman says the city can’t just be marketed as a vacation destination. An Average home in the city costs on average 100-thousand-dollars more than in other nearby school districts.
The incoming kindergarten class is just 58 students, while there are 85 set to graduate this year.
Just this week USA Today awarded the city the “Best Coastal Small Town in America” honor.
