WASHINGTON (WHTC) – The American Lung Association’s annual State of the Air report put the Grand Rapids metro area, which includes the entire Lakeshore, as the 18th worst nationwide for ozone levels, but 96th for soot. The findings are based on air pollution data collected from 2011 to 2013. Agency officials cite progress over the 16 years since these reports began and admit that higher ozone levels here that stem from sources across Lake Michigan should help spur a national solution to this problem. The entire report is on the ALA’s State of the Air website.
