PORT SHELDON, MI (WHTC) – A 24-year-old Byron Center man died in an overnight boating accident in Lake Michigan. Ottawa County Sheriff’s Marine Patrol deputies say that conditions were foggy around 1 AM as the southbound vessel struck the Pigeon Lake Channel pier in Port Sheldon Township. Matthew Boomstra was killed, while three others in the craft – 27-year-old Travis Buckley of Hudsonville, along with 23-year-old Jennifer Hielkema and 24-year-old Albert Diaz, both of Byron Center – were hospitalized. Deputies were assisted by Coast Guard crews in responding to the incident, which remains under investigation.
