GRAND HAVEN, MI (WHTC) – Two months after a fire tore through Chinook Pier Restroom, in Grand Haven, city leaders are finally receiving the go-ahead from the insurance company to start rebuilding. Late at night on April 2, fisherman reported seeing flames and smoke coming from the building and reported it to the authorities.
The Grand Haven Fire Department was unable to extinguish the flames until early the next morning, but by then the roof had already collapsed. Just last week, the city reached an agreement with Abonmarche Consultants to begin making plans to rebuild the facility after receiving conformation from an insurance company that the building was salvageable.
City Manager Pat McGinnis stated in an interview with the Grand Haven Tribune that the cost of the construction will be approximately in the $200,000 range. The City Council is planning to submit a claim to the insurance company to cover some of the cost of repairs. The Chinook Pier Restroom sits on the waterfront of Grand Haven’s Chinook Pier, located at 301 N. Harbor Drive.
