CROCKERY TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Feb. 1, 2022) – An 87-year-old Nunica man has perished in a residential fire shortly after midnight on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, the Ottawa County Medical Examiners Office confirmed via an autopsy that the remains found at a residence in the 15 thousand block of 138th Avenue following a blaze were that of Gordon Chittenden. He had been reported as missing after firefighters brought the flames there under control, as efforts to find him were initially unsuccessful, but when the remains were discovered, the process of identifying him began.
The structure was fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived around 12:30 AM on Tuesday, and Mr. Chittenden was the lone occupant of the residence. A cause of the fire still hasn’t been officially determined.
The investigation into the incident continues, and anyone with any information on the matter is asked to contact Ottawa County Central Dispatch (800-249-0911) or Silent Observer (877-887-4536).
