HOLLAND TWP, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 28, 2022) – A reported shooting at a convenience store/fueling station on Holland’s North Side on Friday night led to the arrest of a 49-year-old Holland man, as well as the injuring of a 23-year-old Holland man in a separate incident.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Michael Hallmeyer, deputies were dispatched at 10:11 PM to the Shell gas station at the intersection of River and Douglas avenues on a report of a shooting. “Our investigation determined that a small altercation had occurred between two men, with one man pulling out a handgun and firing one round at the vehicle of the other man,” Hallmeyer said in a department statement. “The suspect who fired the shot fled the scene in a vehicle. Witnesses obtained the license plate of that vehicle, which quickly led to the identification of the suspect.
“Deputies began patrolling several areas around Holland Township, and a short time later, the suspect and the vehicle were located. The suspect was taken into custody without incident.”
Hallmeyer added that the suspect and the other man, a 30-year-old from Hamilton, did not know each other, and it wasn’t immediately clear why the suspect fired the weapon towards the victim. There were no reported injuries suffered by either the Hamilton man or by any bystanders at the scene of the altercation.
The unnamed suspect should be spending the weekend in the Ottawa County Jail pending arraignment in Holland District Court on various charges.
In a separate incident, a two-vehicle crash involving a Sheriff’s Department cruiser, which was apparently involved in responding to this shooting, injured a 23-year-old Holland man.
According to Hallmeyer, an unnamed 27-year-old deputy was “en route to a high-priority call at 10:39 PM, with his lights and sirens activated,” according to a department statement. “He was heading northbound on 136th Avenue when he collided with a westbound Honda Cr-V in the intersection at Riley Street.”
The deputy was unhurt, while the other motorist was taken to Holland Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
As is standard protocol when a Sheriff’s department vehicle is involved in such an collision as this, an outside jurisdiction handles the investigation, which in this case is the Holland Department of Public Safety Police Operations.
