LAWTON, MI (WHTC) – An elderly man was killed in a fatal car accident on Friday morning after he crashed into a church in Van Buren County. Sheriff Dale R. Gribler reports that deputies were called to St. Paul’s Methodist Church at M-40 Highway and 64th Avenue in Antwerp Township at 10:16 a.m. As police investigated the scene, they found a vehicle rolled onto its side and leaning against the church. The deputies found an unresponsive 73-year-old man inside of the car. It was determined that the man was travelling northbound on M-40 when the vehicle ran off the road, drove through a yard just south of 64th Avenue, and crashed through the entryway of the church. The vehicle got caught on part of the debris of the entryway, which caused the car to roll onto its side. The driver was transported to Bronson Lake View Hospital and pronounced dead a short time after arriving. The crash remains under investigation.
