SPRING LAKE TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 27, 2022) – A man who escaped injury when his SUV hit a tree north of Spring Lake on Thursday afternoon ended up hospitalized when a semi struck him afterward.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Jacob MacKeller, deputies and first responders were dispatched just before 2 PM to the southbound lanes of US-31 south of Taft Street. “The on-scene investigation showed that a 1999 Jeep, driven by a 54-year-old man from Holton, was southbound on US-31 and had just passed Taft Street when his vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree,” MacKeller said in a department statement. “The driver was not injured in this collision and then exited his vehicle. While being offered assistance from passersby, the driver walked into the far left southbound lane of US-31 and was struck by a semi.”
The unnamed motorist was taken to Mercy Health Muskegon in serious condition as a result of being struck by the truck. The semi driver, a 44-year-old Zeeland man, was not hurt.
The incident remains under investigation.
