SOUTH HAVEN, MI (WHTC) – The Michigan Maritime Museum is welcoming back speaker Michael McCarthy who will be giving a lecture tonight on the 1915 Eastland disaster titled after his book, Ashes Under Water: The SS Eastland and the Shipwreck that Shook America.
July 24 of this year marked the centennial of one of the nation’s worst disasters, the 1915 sinking of the steamship Eastland in the Chicago River, with more passenger deaths than the Titanic.
Author, former reporter and editor for the Wall Street Journal, McCarthy learned to sail on Lake Michigan and will be speaking at the Listiak Auditorium in South Haven at 7 pm tonight. He will be available for a book signing prior to the lecture.
Admission is $10, but free for Museum members.
