ALLENDALE, MI (WHTC) – A scholarship has been created in honor of a South Haven firefighter Richard Wheeler who died battling forest fires in Washington State.
Grand Valley State University is making The Richard Wheeler First Responder Memorial Scholarship available to students who are dependents of those who have fallen as first responders. Flags have been flying at half-staff at GVSU where Wheeler graduated in 2013 and will remain so for 30 days.
The amount of the scholorship has not been established as of yet.
The U.S. Forest Service has announced plans for a memorial service in Wenatchee, Washington, where Wheeler lived, for all three firefighters who died that day.
Funeral services for the 31-year-old Wheeler in South Haven are still pending.
