ALLENDALE, MI (WHTC) – Ground was broken today on a 17-acre community solar project on the GVSU campus in Allendale. A joint effort by the Lakers and Consumers Energy, the effort to generate three megawatts of electricity should be ready by next spring. The Jackson-based utility is bearing the brunt of all of the construction and operating costs in what officials are calling the largest community solar project in Michigan, located off of the intersection of 48th Avenue and Luce Street. GVSU will buy 500 kilowatts of power from the project for 25 years at a cost of 1.3 million dollars.
