ALLENDALE, MI (WHTC) – A Grand Valley State University student senator is fighting gun control policies on campus. WZZM reports Benjamin Soltis put through a measure at the last Student Senate General Assembly meeting that says students should be able to carry guns on campus during emergencies and that the University should waive punishments for students who use guns to protect themselves.
In what Soltis calls the “good Samaritan” resolution, he positions that state law actually allows licensed conceal-carry permit holders to carry a gun on campuses. However, if a student is caught carrying a gun, GVSU has the right to ask that person to leave the campus.
If the student refuses, they can be arrested for trespassing. Soltis’ resolution will be voted upon by the Student Senate in two weeks. If it passes, it will go to the Academic Senate and then through the department that revises the Student Code.
