HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – Holland is starting to prepare for the Holidays this week!
11/16 Monday: Holland Arts Council Exhibit: RePrize- The Arts Council invited Lakeshore artists to display their work from November 12 through January 8. Those who didn’t get make it to ArtPrize or didn’t get to see all of our local artists’ work can visit the Arts Council for a taste of the ArtPrize experience right downtown Holland. In our fourth annual nod to Grand Rapids’ ArtPrize, the Arts Council has invited local participants of this year’s event to display their entries in our gallery. The exhibition gives us an opportunity to enjoy ArtPrize if we missed the big event and a chance to see local artists’ work in one location. 150 E 8th St, Holland; 10am- 8am; Free.
11/17 Tuesday: Hope College Vocal Jazz Concert at Jack H. Miller Center for the Arts, Recital Hall- Students studying vocal jazz are coached by Edye Hyde. 221 Columbia Ave., Holland; 7:30pm; Free.
11/18 Wednesday: Hope College Theatre Department presents “The Sparrow” at DeWitt Theatre- Written by Chris Matthews, Jake Minton, and Nathan Allen, and developed by The House Theatre of Chicago, “The Sparrow” tells the story of a teen with unusual hidden powers that could either save or destroy her hometown. The Chicago Tribune called the play “a thrilling, riveting celebration of the power of the imagination that adults and teens can enjoy, and understand, together.” 141 East 12th Street, Holland; 7:30pm; Adult $10, Senior, Hope Faculty & Staff $7, Hope Students & 13-18 year olds $5, Children 12 and under FREE.
11/19 Thursday: Jack Ridl Visiting Writers Series: Tim O’Brien Partnering with the Big Read at the Commons at Evergreen- Tim O’Brien received the National Book Award in Fiction in 1979 for his novel Going After Cacciato. In 2005 The Things They Carried was named by the New York Times as one of the twenty-two best books of the last quarter century. It received the Chicago Tribune Heartland Award in fiction and was a finalist for both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award. The French edition of The Things They Carried received one of France’s most prestigious literary awards, the Prix du Meilleur Livre Etranger. The title story from The Things They Carried received the National Magazine Award and was selected by John Updike for inclusion in The Best American Short Stories of the Century. In the Lake of the Woods, published in 1994, was chosen by Time magazine as the best novel of that year. The book also received the James Fenimore Cooper Prize from the Society of American Historians and was selected as one of the ten best books of the year by The New York Times. 480 State Street, Holland; 7 PM; Free.

11/21 Saturday: Holiday Kerstmarkt at Eighth Street Marketplace- Enjoy a bit of the Netherlands at a European-style, open-air holiday market in Holland, MI! Shop for unique gifts, enjoy authentic Dutch food, watch the fabulous Parade of Lights and sneak a peek at Sinterklaas! Sixteen vendors are housed in historically crafted booths, offering greenery, home decor, jewelry, fur and wool items, toys, pet gifts, pottery, artistic items, holiday cookies, candies, Dutch food and more! 150 West Eighth Street, Holland; 9 AM-3PM.
11/22 Sunday: The Nutcracker Sweet Ballet Brunch at The Holland Area Arts Council- he Nutcracker Sweet Ballet Brunch is a story-time brunch in a winter fairy-tale land of ballerinas, nutcrackers and toy soldiers on Sunday, November 22 at 1:00 pm. Uncle Drosselmeyer will narrate the story of the Nutcracker while real-life characters from the Grand Rapids Ballet Youth Company dance throughout the room. Members of the Holland Area Youth Orchestra will play. Families will enjoy a delicious meal in the midst of the magic. All ages are welcome, but children should be accompanied by an adult. 150 E 8th St, Holland; 1pm; $10.
