HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – During last night’s Holland City Council meeting, members were told by city staffers that the Tulip City is currently fourth among 50 cities vying for a five million-dollar-plus Georgetown University Energy Prize. The competition to see who can reduce energy usage the most over a two-year period ends next year, and Council approved a 120 thousand-dollar allocation to fund the city’s participation through its end. Huntsville, Alabama is currently leading the pack.
It was the first Council business meeting for Quincy Bird, who was appointed to an at-large seat a week ago. Holland’s first black City Councilman fills the vacancy created when Nancy DeBoer won election as the Tulip City’s first female mayor last month, and will complete the remaining two years of her term.
Council also passed a resolution commending Bob Vande Vusse for his 24 years of service on the panel. His tenure, mostly as a Fourth Ward Councilman, ended with his defeat by DeBoer in last month’s mayoral election.
