HOPKINS TWP., MI (WHTC) – Allegan County Sheriff’s officials released a statement with the name of a man killed in a two-vehicle, head-on crash near Hopkins around 6:30 PM Wednesday night: John Jerome Dolegowski, 58, an Allegan-area resident.
“The driver of the passenger car will not be identified since a request will be made to the prosecutor’s office for possible charges in this case,” the statement read. Police are investigating whether drugs and alcohol were involved in the crash..
The Sheriff’s office reported that a woman driving a passenger car westbound on 130th Avenue drove through a stop sign at 22nd Street, into the path of a southbound pickup truck. She had to be extricated from her burning vehicle; Dolegowski was thrown from his truck.
Both were taken to Spectrum-Butterworth Hospital, where he succumbed to his severe injuries and she is recovering from non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Gun Lake Tribal Police assisted at the scene of the crash, with AMR Ambulance transporting Dolegowski to the hospital and the woman airlifted by Aeromed. Other agencies responding to the crash were Hopkins Fire Dept., Wayland EMS and the Michigan State Police.
