HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – An area lawmaker wants to give school districts more flexibility in putting together their school calendars. State Representative Daniela Garcia of Holland has introduced a two-bill package in response to comments she’s received from local superintendents and administrators, asking for greater flexibility in determining their classroom schedules each year. One bill would establish criteria for school calendar waivers to be automatically granted. The measure would also require school districts to hold a public hearing before applying for a waiver. The second bill would ban calendar and scheduling items from being discussed in bargaining with teachers’ unions, and give districts autonomy in setting their annual school calendar. Garcia says she has faith in local school boards and superintendents to adopt a schedule that is in the best interest of students and parents, and respects the time and talents of staff. The bills have been referred to the House Education Committee.
