SOUTH HAVEN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – It was a pleasant Saturday afternoon weather-wise on the shores of Lake Michigan at South Haven, but it wasn’t a nice day to be in the waters of Lake Michigan there.
Red flags were flying at South Beach due to the National Weather Service office in Grand Rapids posting a Hazard Beach Warning. However, a man and a woman was in the waters on the lake side of the pier, and first responders from South Haven Area Emergency Services were dispatched to the area shortly before 2 PM in an attempt to rescue them.
The woman was able to get to the shore on her own. A responder was already in the vicinity, so he donned his water rescue equipment, and with the help of some “Good Samaritans” on the beach, located the man and brought him to the shore.
The man was first taken to Bronson-South Haven Hospital, with a Air Care helicopter on standby if he had to be flown to Kalamazoo. The woman and the first responder were also taken to Bronson-South Haven Hospital for evaluation and observation.
It was learned that the woman had apparently been swept into the waters, and the man followed in an attempt to rescue her when the first responders were called.
The incident remains under investigation.
