Charles (Charlie) Robert Hancock, 80, of Fennville, MI passed away Wednesday, November 3, 2021. Born May 29, 1941, in Kalamazoo, he was the son of the late Charles Franklin and Virginia Mary (Gibson) Hancock and was the husband of Edith (Mosier) Hancock. Charlie was an Eagle Scout, earned his undergraduate degree from Western Michigan University and his graduate degree from Oakland University. He devoted thirty-eight years to public education as an elementary school teacher in Livonia prior to retirement. He specialized in teaching math and science. Charlie later volunteered his time to mentor students at Douglas Elementary School. He stayed busy with various memberships and activities throughout the area. Charlie was a member of the Ganges Township Planning Commission, Lakeshore Model Railroaders, and participated in Civil War reenactments in the Township. He was proud of his membership in the Retired Teachers’ Association where they worked on establishing a scholarship program for graduating seniors pursuing a career in education. Charlie had attended Community Church of Douglas for seventeen years where he was very active in the choir. When Charlie had spare time, he enjoyed gardening, woodworking, and restoring his vintage Mustang.
In addition to his wife, Edith, he is survived by his children, Jennifer (Jim) Vernier and Jeff Hancock; stepchildren, Greg (Judy) Cichock, Daris Cichock, Suzeanne (Tom) Mitchell, and Rebecca (DuWayne) Blankley; a brother, Terry (Mary) Hancock; and fourteen grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Chappell Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 10, 2021, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A memorial service will be held at Community Church of Douglas on Thursday, November 11, 2021, at 11:00 AM with a luncheon to follow. Charlie will be laid to rest privately in Taylor Cemetery, Ganges Township. Memorial donations may be made to Community Church of Douglas, P.O. Box 338, Douglas, MI 49406.
