KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A special garden will soon take root soon at a Kalamazoo homeless veteran’s residence, thanks to a bit of help from Lowe’s.
A team of personnel from the Portage store will be present at Keystone Veteran Transitional House Friday, October 29, to build eight raised-bed garden boxes and install fencing for a therapy garden.
Keystone Housing Coordinator Tyrone Thrash said, “A lot of the Vets enjoy gardening; it’s truly therapeutic during a very stressful time in their lives.”
To get some expert help, the KVTH staff worked with Lowe’s manager Jim Merkle, a Marine Corp veteran himself, to design the garden. Merkle also plans to be at the site to help build the garden beds.
The team plans to get underway at 9 a.m. and hopes to be finished by 2 p.m.
Keystone Veteran Transitional House is a 12-bed shelter for homeless military service veterans located at 422 East Stockbridge in Kalamazoo. Integrated Services of Kalamazoo opened the home in the summer of 2020.
Those accepted into the program are connected with housing resources in the Kalamazoo County area as well as the Battle Creek VA.
