HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Most government offices, courts, banks and the US Post Office are closed today. By any name, it’s a federal holiday.
Americans have officially observed Columbus Day since 1937, most recently marked on the second Monday in October, but the culture is shifting.
President Biden declared today, Oct. 11, 2021, to be Indigenous Peoples’ Day, recognizing American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians who “built vibrant and diverse cultures,” while “safeguarding land, language, spirit, knowledge, and tradition across the generations.”
On this day, Biden’s statement says, the nation “recognizes their inherent sovereignty, and commits to honoring the Federal Government’s trust and treaty obligations to Tribal Nations.”
Gov Gretchen Whitmer also issued a proclamation declaring today Indigenous Peoples Day
It’s also Thanksgiving in Canada.
