HOLLAND (WHTC-M/FM) — National Weather Service meteorologists in Grand Rapids have issued several alerts for Lakeshore counties:
Heat: Temperatures in the upper 80s to near 90s, with high humidity will cause heat indices to reach 95 to 100 Sunday afternoon, Aug. 29, 2021.
This type of weather cause lead to people and animals suffering heat-related illnesses. People and pets should drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun, and stay in an air-conditioned spaces. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances, according to the NWS alert, which appeals to people to and check on relatives and neighbors.
Beach hazards, in effect until 10 p.m. for the following counties: Ottawa, Allegan, Muskegon, Oceana, and Mason. People visiting the beach should not expect to get into Lake Michigan or walk out onto the piers. Waves will reach 3 to 5 feet in general and up to 7 feet along Holland-area beaches and will swamp piers. Currents can pull swimmers into deeper water and conditions will be hazardous even for experience swimmers.
Air-quality alert, in effect all day Sunday for Mason, Oceana, Muskegon, Kent, Allegan and Ottawa counties. Air conditions will make breathing difficult for active children and adults, and people with asthma or other breathing disorders. People are encouraged to limit prolonged
outdoor exertion. People and businesses are urged to avoid activities that increase ozone, such as vehicle refueling or topping off; using gas-powered law equipment, and charcoal lighter fluid. People can help limit ozone by car pooling, biking to work, delaying or combining errands, and using water based paints. Learn more at michigan.gov/EGLE.
Small-craft advisory: Windy conditions and waves 3 to 7 feet from St Joseph to Manistee will created conditions hazardous to small craft. “Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid navigating in hazardous conditions,” according to the NWS advisory.
NWS meteorologists indicated the possibility of scattered strong-to-severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. Gusty winds and large hail are may occur between 1 and 9 p.m.
