HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Some Consumers Energy customers may have to wait until the weekend to get the power back. Consumers Energy officials started watching the storm system on Friday according to utility spokesman Josh Paciorek.
He said the storm response includes an all-hands-on-deck approach and support from utilities in seven other states.
He said the storms affected Consumers Energy’s entire service area. Listen to the full podcast: .
“We understand that this can be frustrating. Power outages can be difficult for out customers,” he said. “We appreciate their patience.”
He said crews are “out there 24/7. You’ll see them all over the state today, working with crews from, you know, neighboring states, as far away as New York and Missouri, trying to get the power back on as quickly as possible.”
In at least one instance, a generator caused a house fire. Utility officials are appealing to people to follow these safety tips:
- Stay at least 25 feet away from any downed wires and anything they may be touching, even if they are not sparking. Once you’re safe, call 9-1-1. Then call Consumers at 800-477-5050.
- Don’t use candles during an outage, as they can be a major fire hazard.
- If you’re using a generator, make sure it is at least 25 feet away from any buildings.
- Once power is restored, check your appliances to make sure they’re working, and reset any clocks or timers.
- Food will stay cold in a closed fridge for up to 24 hours, and for up to 48 hours in a freezer.
- Update your short-time power outage plans to include outages that last 2 days or more.
- Treat all intersections where traffic lights are not working as if they were four-way stops.
