HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — The westbound ramp on I-96 at the Coopersville exit was closed for several hours last night after a semi-tractor trailer caught fire just before 7 p.m. No one was hurt.
Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sgt. Nicholas Knott said deputies and Coopersville/Polkton firefighters responded to the scene.
Knott indicated the semi had been westbound on I-96 when the driver encountered a mechanical issue with the trailer.
The driver was able to pull off the highway onto the off ramp but the trailer had caught fire. The driver was able to disconnect the trailer, which was loaded with polysterene foam — often called Styrofoam — which quickly caught fire that consumed the entire trailer.
