DETROIT, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — After people left vehicles stranded in floodwaters on I-94 in the Detroit area, Governor Whitmer is now speaking out about some of the high towing fees people are being charged.
“We’ve got to take a look to see if there is some way to help these motorists. I recognize that there is pain being felt by people in many different ways. It’s something we want to try to help people navigate if we have the possibility to do so.”
And GM Freight owner Adam McCloe is still shocked by the amount charged to his company by a towing company that moved a semi-truck seven miles after it got stuck in floodwaters on the freeway. The fee was $6,300 with an additional swimmer’s fee of over $2,000, plus taxes for a total of nearly $10,000.
“We’re a fairly small business, so I think sometimes when you see a commercial vehicle you see dollar signs and deep pockets. But that’s not always the case.”
Attorney General Dana Nessel says she is concerned about people price gouging others and says they will investigate complaints. McCloe says repairs, along with the towing bill, will likely be over $100,000.
