Gertrude Van Someren, age 97, of Zeeland, passed away on June 18, 2021.
Gertrude was born on August 30, 1923, to Gerret and Sieberena (Ludema) Laarman in Georgetown Township, MI. She married Bernard A. Van Someren of Baldwin, WI, on June 5, 1947, and served CRC churches with him in Ada, MI, Oostburg, WI, Sully, IA, Patterson, NJ, and Jenison, MI. She worked on her parents’ farm and then in the factory and office jobs. She loved reading all her life and completed high school while raising her family. In retirement, she was an artist, writer, and prize-winning quilter.
She is survived by her children Randall and Marcia Van Someren of Oak Harbor, WA, Mary and David Cok of Rochester, NY, Ellen and Philip Smith of Glenview, IL, Janice and Glenn Meister of Jenison, MI, and grandchildren Elizabeth (Cok) and Morgan Knighton of Westerville, OH, Jonathan Thomas and Melanie Correia of Marietta, GA, Joseph and Sara Henderson of Flagstaff, AZ, Alexandra Cok of Somerville, MA, Paul and Maren Henderson of Minneapolis, MN, eight great-grandchildren, and step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Jeanette (Mesbergen) Hulst of Hudsonville, in-laws Richard and Carol Van Someren of Baldwin, WI, and Delores Van Someren of Hammond, WI, and nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her older sister Josie Laarman, infant daughter Linda, parents, step-father Peter Mesbergen, beloved husband of 63 years Bernard, and many in-laws.
Visitation will be on June 22, 6-8 p.m. and funeral services will be held on June 23, 11:00 a.m., at Yntema Funeral Home, 251 South State Street, Zeeland, with Rev. Shaun Furniss of North Street CRC officiating. Burial will be in Georgetown Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Resonate Global Mission (CRC World Missions).
