Evelyn (Koster) Hanko, who would have turned 98 this week, died to this life on June 7, 2021.
Evelyn was born June 11, 1923, in Chicago, Illinois, to Nick and Kate Koster. She was the youngest of three daughters. She graduated from Fenger High School where she played the coronet in the high school band. Later, she worked as a laboratory technician.
She married Al Hanko in 1948 and they had four children: Kathy Vander Wal (Dar), Fred Hanko (Carol Scholten), Carole Fields (Jan), and Mark Hanko (Wendy Smith); ten grandchildren; and seventeen great-grandchildren. Evelyn was an active member of Christ Memorial Church for 63 years. There, she cultivated many meaningful and lasting friendships.
If you could choose only one word to describe Evelyn it would be FUN. She loved a game of Scrabble and cards and was a skillful and creative homemaker and especially talented at sewing, knitting, and painting. She was an active listener and an enthusiastic conversationalist who delighted in the small details. We will miss her sense of humor and dramatic storytelling.
A Celebration of Evelyn’s life is scheduled for 11:00 am Saturday, June 12, 2021, at Langeland Sterenberg Funeral Home, 315 E. 16th St., Holland, MI 49423 with Rev. Ronald Beyer officiating. A time of visitation with the family is planned for just prior starting at 10:00 am.
Memorial contributions in Evelyn’s honor may be given to Camp Geneva or Spectrum Health Hospice.
Burial to be in Graafschap Cemetery.
A special thank you to the staff at American House and Spectrum Health Hospice.
