ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Thursday (May 6, 2021) is a day to honor those who serve in the medical field.
It’s National Nurses’ Day, the start of National Nurses’ Week, and more than a year of being among those on the front lines of the COVID 19 outbreak, Chief Nursing Officer Linda Schaltz of Spectrum Health-Zeeland Community Hospital and her colleagues have had to be flexible and durable.
“Many of our team members over the last year have worked additional hours to insure that we can care for patients,” she said on “WHTC Wellspring” during the weekly segment on Thursday. “Many of them had cross-trained, from the department in which they had been working, to a new department, in order to help where there was a greater need. In the end, they were all willing to step up and provide care wherever the need was, consistently rising to the challenges, and doing what was best for patients and their fellow team members.”
National Nurses Week goes through May 12, when health care pioneer Florence Nightingale was born, and nurses are some of the most trusted professionals, for in a 2020 Gallup poll, they earned a record 89% very high/high score for their honesty and ethics, which was four percentage points greater than in 2019.
