WEST OLIVE, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Christmas may be more than seven months away, but Steve Kempker got a gift from the Ottawa County Board of Commissioners last month.
The Sheriff had been pushing to get body cams for his deputies and dash cams for department vehicles for quite some time, and while he was taking some time off, word came that funding to purchase those cams was approved. Kempker is aware, though, that getting the hardware is just the start.
“There are a lot of things on the back side of a body camera project,” he admitted on “WHTC Talk of the Town” during an appearance last Friday. “The biggest part of that is the IT or technical side of it – where do we store all this mass of data? It is also going to require that we hire one or two people to manage a system of this size for an agency of this size.”
Kempker added that the body cams and dash cams should be deployed by late this autumn.
