TRACK/FIELD
With one school record, one race win and eight new career-best times, a small but mighty contingent of 10 student-athletes represented the Hope women’s and men’s track and field teams at the 54th Annual GINA Relays, hosted by Hillsdale College.
The meet attracts some of the best distance runners in the region, with 46 college programs along with a variety of elite sponsored and amateur athletes competing unattached in attendance.
After setting four school records during the 2021 indoor campaign, Ana Tucker, pictured left, wrote her name in the outdoor record book for the first time after her stellar performance in the 5,000 meter championship race on Friday.
The sophomore out of Midland, Michigan (Herbert Henry Dow) lowered the standard to 16:37.99, dethroning Erin Herrmann’s time of 17:03.05 from the 2017 season. Tucker placed seventh overall.
Although Nick Hoffman (Holland, Michigan / Holland), pictured right, was less than two tenths shy of his career-best time in the 1,500 meters, his mark of 3:49.65 still earned the junior the top spot on the podium. It was Hoffman’s fourth race win of the outdoor season and first in the 1,500.
BASEBALL
The Hope College baseball team got into the swing of things just in time.
The Flying Dutchmen erupted for a 17-9 victory at Calvin University on Friday after losing the opener, 7-1.
Hope matched its second-highest run total of the season by pounding out 13 hits, including seven for extra bases, and capitalizing on 10 walks by Calvin pitchers. The Flying Dutchmen scored in every inning.
A three-run double from catcher Cal Barrett (Chelsea, Michigan/Chelsea HS), pictured right, in the top of the second inning gave Hope the lead for good at 6-4. The next batter, shortstop Brant Kym (Libertyville, Illinois/Libertyville), knocked in Barrett with a single.
Barrett also had an RBI double in a three-run first. He went 3-for-5 with three doubles and four runs batted in.
MEN’S TENNIS
The Hope College men’s tennis team suffered its first MIAA loss, bowing at Kalamazoo College, 8-1, on Friday.
The defeat drops the Flying Dutchmen’s record to 5-1 in the league and 5-7 overall.
The Hornets improved to 5-0 in the MIAA and 7-0 overall.
Sophomore Jacob Burkett (Clarkston, Michigan / Clarkston), pictured, recorded Hope’s only victory. He won his match at No. 1 singles versus Kalamazoo’s Ian Yi. After splitting the first two sets, 0-6, 7-6 (7-5), Burkett won the match on a 10-point third-set tiebreaker, 10-6.
