MEN’S AND WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
The Hope College women’s and men’s cross country teams could not compete last fall but still have continued a proud tradition of excellence in the classroom.
Both the Flying Dutch and the Flying Dutchmen have earned the United States Track and Fiel and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team Award.
The women’s team has achieved distinction every year since the program debuted — a run of 31 times. The men’s team has claimed the recognition in 30 of 31 seasons.
In order to qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team Award, teams must have a cumulative GPA of 3.1 or higher.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The Hope College women’s basketball team has been awarded the 2021 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association regular-season championship by the league’s presidents.
The Flying Dutch went 7-0 in MIAA play this winter, but initially were not crowned regular-season champions because COVID-19 cancellations created an incomplete league schedule.
In response, MIAA Presidents recently approved a formula that ensures fairness in determining regular-season champions across all winter and spring sports. The formula takes into account the win-loss record of each team and the win-loss record of their opponents.
The MIAA title is Hope’s 19th in women’s basketball and second in a row. The Flying Dutch have been MIAA champions in five of the past six seasons.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Hope College’s Bailey Chorney has been named the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week. The senior business and Spanish double major from Waunakee, Wisconsin (Waunakee HS) is receiving the honor for the first time.
Chorney is recognized after scoring two points for the Flying Dutch during their 8-1 victory at home against Kalamazoo College on Friday.
WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD
Hope College senior Hannah Kenny is being honored as the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week for her accomplishments in running events last Friday.
The Spanish and social work double major from Grand Haven, Michigan (Grand Haven HS) led the Flying Dutch with a first-place result in the 1500 meters at the Comet Invitational hosted by Olivet College. Kenny dominated the race, clocking a time of 4:45.02 – nearly 20 seconds faster than the closest competitor and more than nine seconds better than her previous collegiate-best time.
WOMEN’S GOLF
The Hope College women’s golf team came in as runners-up by one stroke to the Saint Mary’s College Belles at Clearbrook Golf Club in Saugatuck, Michigan, and now the two teams are tied for first place in the MIAA standings after four rounds. Hope shot a team total of 324 while the Belles finished with 323. Calvin University took third place with 337.
After 72 holes of league play, the Flying Dutch and the Belles each have 1,292 strokes while the Knights are a distant third with 1,321.
