MEN’S LACROSSE
Twelve different players on the Hope College men’s lacrosse team scored in Friday night’s electric win over Kalamazoo.
The Flying Dutchmen erupted early with eight unanswered goals, blanking the Hornets in the first half, and scoring three more goals before Kalamazoo got on the board 5 minutes and 43 seconds into the second quarter.
The 20-4 victory improves Hope’s record to 5-0 and marks the first time Hope has scored 20 goals in three consecutive games since its varsity debut in 2013.
Freshman attacker Michael Mann of Plymouth (University of Detroit-Jesuit) and senior midfielder Luke Elder of Grand Rapids (East Grand Rapids HS) led Hope in scoring with four goals each.
Hope extended its lead to 18-2 with seven more unanswered goals in the second and third quarter.
BASEBALL
The Hope College baseball opened MIAA conference play by splitting a doubleheader Friday at Kalamazoo College. The Flying Dutchmen came storming back to win the nightcap, 20-1, after the Hornets won the opener, 6-3.
The same teams meet again Saturday for a league doubleheader at Boeve Stadium beginning at 1 p.m. Hope is 7-4 overall while Kalamazoo is 8-1. Senior Evan Maday (Grand Rapids, Michigan/East Kentwood) enjoyed a career day on the bases, highlighted by becoming Hope’s all-time leader in stolen bases. He stole five bases in the doubleheader to raise his career total to 61, three better than the previous career mark of 58 steals by Mitch Van Putten from 1982-85.
At the plate, Maday was 4-for-7 on the day highlighted by a three-run home run in the nightcap.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
The Hope College women’s soccer team dropped an overtime heartbreaker to archrival Calvin University in its season opener Friday night, falling to the Knights 2-1 at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
Calvin scored the winning goal 3:47 into the first overtime period, which won its third consecutive game to start the season.
Hope pulled even in the 59th minute. Freshman Madison Holloway of Macatawa, Mich. (Holland Christian HS) raced up the left side and booted a shot that was stopped, but fellow freshman Natalie Hammer of Rockford, Mich. (Rockford HS), pictured left, pounced on the loose rebound and drove it into the right corner of the net for her first career goal to tie the score at 1-1.
The Flying Dutch outshot the Knights 14-11 and took four corner kicks to Calvin’s five. Senior goalkeeper Jordanne Ellingboe of Grand Haven, Mich. (Grand Haven HS) made seven saves for the Flying Dutch.
SOFTBALL
The Hope College softball team dropped two games on the road on Friday.
Playing at Trine University, the Flying Dutch lost to the Adrian College Bulldogs in Game 1, 6-2, and then fell in Game 2 against the host Thunder, 8-5.
Both games do not count in the official MIAA standings. Hope is now 6-2 overall and remains 2-0 in the league.
Against Adrian, junior second baseman Arinn King (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) hit her second home run of the season.
King’s day at the plate was a .500 affair as she went 4-for-8 with a double and home run.
HOCKEY
The Hope College American Collegiate Hockey Association team fell to Calvin University, 4-3, on Friday at Griff’s IceHouse West.
The Flying Dutchmen (7-2-1 overall) received goals from Allan Hirsch, Mason Weiss and Jake Adams.
Goalie Lukas Schut made 16 saves for Hope.
Calvin rallied for the victory by scoring the final three goals of the game.
The Flying Dutchmen’s next game is Saturday, March 27 at 5 p.m. vs Calvin at Eagles Ice Center in Grand Rapids.
