LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The National Federation of Independent Business testified Thursday, supporting legislation that would prevent a business from being closed by an emergency order while other, similar businesses are allowed to remain open.
A related bill in Lansing was the subject of a hearing in the House Government Operations Committee. Under the bill, a small business could not be required to close under an emergency pandemic order as long as it is in compliance with the precautions required of another business that is allowed to stay open under the same order.
Michigan officials with the NFIB also are supporting legislation that would limit emergency orders issued by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to no more than 28 days without legislative approval.
When the Michigan Supreme Court declared Governor Whitmer’s executive orders to restrict and close businesses unconstitutional last fall, similar emergency orders by the Governor were continued to be made through the MDHHS.
