HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — A woman and her dog escaped injury in a fire that destroyed their home after an Allegan County Deputy patrolling Lee Township spotted flames coming from the chimney, according to a statement from Allegan County Sheriff Frank Baker.
The deputy noticed the home, near 56th Street south of 109th Avenue had lights on inside and a vehicle was in the driveway. With siren on and lights flashing, the deputy pulled into the driveway and began pounding on the front door.
Moments later, the 27-year-old woman living there opened the door, asking what was wrong, unaware of the fire. She’s been upstairs getting ready for bed with the deputy’s noises drew her downstairs.
The deputy helped the women and her dog get out of the house. Lee Township firefighters and EMTs arrived on scene putting out the fire.
Baker indicated the home appears to be a total loss.
Fire officials, Baker said, indicated the fire may have been caused by a wood-pellet-burning stove.
Baker told WHTC his office withholds deputies’ names, pending permission, adding, “I imagine we will do something to recognize his actions such as an award or letter of commendation and will release it at that time.”
