WASHINGTON (WHTC-AM/FM) – Now that Donald Trump is not in the White House, just who is the leader of the Republican Party?
After being acquitted earlier this month of impeachment by the U Senate, the former President has reemerged from a self-imposed media silence to remark on several topics over the past week. Leading GOP figures such as Jim Jordan and Senator Mitt Romney have said that Mr. Trump is still the leader of the GOP and would probably win the Republican presidential nomination in 2024 if he would decide to run.
Six-term US House Representative Bill Huizenga of Zeeland is taking a more wait-and-see approach to this. “We’ll see what President Trump does at C-PAC this weekend,” he said on Thursday during his weekly interview on “WHTC Morning News,” referring to the Conservative Political Action Conference. “At this point, he, along with (former Vice President) Mike Pence are still the voice of the party, to a certain degree, but obviously, that has changed. When you’re not the elected head, (being the GOP leader) is no longer automatic.”
