SOUTH HAVEN, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Officials in charge of rescues along the Lake Michigan shoreline are warning residents to stay off the piers during extreme winter weather conditions.
South Haven Area Emergency Services Executive Director Brandon Hinz told WWMT that the footing at the pier is dangerous to be on during freezing weather.
“Most of them are hollow underneath and they’re very deceptive. There’s no knowing what’s underneath. It looks like it’s decent footing, but you just never know. It’s very dangerous to be walking out on that ice.”
Hinz said there have been no rescues need from his agency during this winter so far. He added that there is no charge for rescues because it’s a taxpayer-based service, but they do consider charges and fees if they can determine that a rescue was the result of a blatant disregard for warnings.
