HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Mar. 12, 2026) – What Hope College called a “beloved” faculty member will be remembered in a memorial service.
Dr. Fred Johnson died two weeks ago at the age of 67 after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was a history professor at the Holland school for over 20 years, focusing on 19th century American history, and specifically, the War Between the States, and as a US Marine veteran, he had a strong love for this country, as exemplified in his comments during the Holland Memorial Day Commemorative Service at Pilgrim Home Cemetery on May 27, 2019.
He also challenged both Pete Hoekstra and Bill Huizenga for US House seats as a Democrat in 2008 and 2010, respectively.
A memorial service for Dr. Johnson is set for Friday at 2 PM in Dimnent Memorial Chapel on the Hope College campus, with a live stream of the proceedings available through the Hope College YouTube Channel, a link to which is here.
