HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Mar. 5, 2026) – Recycling was spotlighted in Wednesday night’s biweekly Holland City Council business meeting.
Among the items on the agenda were two related to the creation of a recycling center for the Tulip City. The state Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy awarded Holland a full $1 million Recycling Infrastructure Grant to help pay for the anticipated total cost of $1.5 million for the project, with an extra $100,000 set aside for contingency purposes. The city has also reached an agreement with Padnos Retail to build the proposed center, at no municipal cost, at the existing Black River Recycling center that is between Chicago Drive and Lakewood Boulevard, with the land for the new center ceded from Holland Township to the city. Council approved both the grant and the Padnos Real Estate Conveyance Agreement for the project.
According to the city’s Sustainability Manager Dan Boersma, this was a matter that has been discussed for several years, in an effort to supplement the current residential curbside recycling service, along with providing an expanded range of options.
Assistant City Manager Matt Van Dyken said that bids for building design should go out later this spring, with about 18 months needed to construct and eventually open the facility.
The Holland City Council meeting was in Chambers at Holland City Hall (270 S. River Ave.). An online link to the agenda and supporting documents, including what items would be recycled at this new center, is here.
